VOODOO SHANGO EXPERIENCE

The Voodoo Shango Experience is a Montreal-based funk collective of seven musicians, founded in 2011 by Johnny Shango (singer, guitarist, trombonist, and bandleader – ex-Colectivo, ex-Funkafones) and Eric Gees guitarist. Inspired by the grooves of the ’70s, the band delivers explosive, irresistible funk, tailor-made for the stage.

In 2013, trumpeter and singer Kim Paris (ex-Colectivo, ex-Projet K/D) and percussionist Paadree Saanto (ex-Colectivo) joined the adventure, bringing rhythmic richness and an undeniable stage presence. Other talents such as bassist Alex Blain (ex-Guano) and singer Elizabeth Blouin-Brathwaite also brought their energy over the years, helping to establish the Voodoo Shango Experience as a rising reference in Montreal’s funk scene.

Between 2014 and 2021, the group recorded four studio albums and played over a hundred shows, despite the busy schedules of its members, all deeply involved in other musical projects.

A NEW BREATH

In 2022, after the pandemic temporarily slowed their momentum, the band decided to take flight once again. Drummer Serge Morin (ex-Colectivo, ex-Overbass) joined the lineup, bringing a solid rhythmic foundation. He was soon followed by keyboardist and singer Joe Evil, also the frontman of Grimskunk, who reinforced the project’s stage dimension.

In 2024, the group continued to evolve with the arrival of bassist Joseph Hackl (ex-Voodoo Jazz), injecting a new dose of groove and precision.

Today, the Voodoo Shango Experience is more complete than ever, and ready to ignite local and international stages.

ONE STAGE, A THOUSAND EXPERIENCES

Collectively, the musicians of the Voodoo Shango Experience have played more than 1,000 concerts with their previous bands, with an impressive track record including the Francofolies de Montréal, LAMC in Los Angeles, the Feria Internacional del Libro in Guadalajara, and many other major festivals. Their live experience is undeniable and shines through every performance, with contagious energy and a truly authentic funk sound.

Now fully dedicated to the project, the members of the Voodoo Shango Experience aim high: to solidify their presence on the Quebec music scene while boldly opening up to international audiences. Their shows are a blazing funk storm, paying homage to the golden age of the genre while infusing it with dazzling modernity.
