ABOUT

Founded in late 2019 by frontman, songwriter and lead vocalist Dainéal MacLean, the project grew from a solo project recorded in the studio rooms at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, composed of stripped down piano/synth melodies that became demos and eventually released as semi-official music video experiences. Initially influenced most by the voices and solo work of Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and Thom Yorke, the year 2020 changed the trajectory of the project and saw it evolve through personal adversity. Surfing In The Dark began to collaborate with session musicians around the globe during the COVID pandemic and developed a new sound most closely associated with the genres of darkwave, cold wave, industrial, post-punk and synthpop. A move from Calgary to Montréal, Quebec has founding member MacLean looking for a full band to collaborate with and play live, and record new material with.

The band has yet to perform live, and has only released recordings made under MacLean and session musicians, and is currently in the process of figuring out its lineup and which city to base itself out of.
