ABOUT

I'm an amateur musician, age 46, playing mostly guitar. I've been been playing for almost 30 years and I'm almost entirely self-taught, although I did take about 2 years of classical lessons with a great teacher (about 20 years ago). I play with nails or thumb/finger picks, or use a pick to strum. I am pretty good a fingerpicking (Travis picking, etc.).
I can also pick up the basics of a lot of different instruments fairly quickly, and can handle myself quite well on a drum kit or other percussion, electric bass, ukulele, octave mandolin, simple keyboard, and irish whistle. I sometimes pull out a saxophone I inherited and can figure out tunes quite well.
I also love to sing, especially harmonies. My range is tenor. I have sung in some choirs and one small a cappella quintet.
I don't have a lot of music theory but have a very good ear and am reasonably comfortable with improvising.
I have done some composing, but I'm not great at coming up with lyrics. I would love to sing harmonies with someone else's lyrics.

Influences

I have extremely eclectic tastes.
A lot of what I like is instrumental music (although I do love to sing).
I love Bach, although don't play it much.
Celtic music might be my overall favourite in terms of just having fun. I have learned a lot of fingerstyle celtic music for guitar in open tunings, and have more recently been learning jigs, reels, etc. with my octave mandolin.
For guitar specifically, I love American Primitive Guitar (finger picking, open tunings): Jack Rose, John Fahey, many others. I have some early arthritis in my hands and open tunings allow me to avoid bar chords, which I find painful if used too much.
For playing guitar while singing, I like a lot of folk (e.g., Bob Dylan's "Don't think twice it's alright" or "The times they are a changin").
