I'm Robb, a 47-year-old bassist in the GTA (Etobicoke).
I suppose that the genre that encompasses most of my musical tastes bass-wise would be rock as it's somewhere between blues and metal. There are innumerable subgenres, so as you all know it's virtually impossible to qualify our experiences within a few categories. The 'Influences' list on this page is by no means an exhaustive one, and certain genres may not be represented even though they're present (within my experience).
I'm able to learn many songs fairly quickly by ear. I'm not a studio bassist and tend to have more of a raw style to my playing, but without improvisation (unless it's called for) and respecting the source material first (cover bands). I do enjoy challenging material, but at the same time I know my limits fairly well at this point and would be able to articulate them upon hearing requested material.
The philosophy that I carry forward is that the music comes first, and I make this happen by glueing everything together while enhancing everyone's sound whenever possible.
Ideally, I'd like to find an established cover band or group of experienced musicians interested in one to play paying gigs. I'd be open to original bands, so feel free to send your demos (preferrably YouTube links).
