Hi there, I'm looking for a band. I moved from the Wicked Centre of the Universe (Toronto) last summer after playing in bands in Vancouver and Toronto (one more dedication-heavy than the others). I am looking for a core group of friendly musicians with similar musical interests, and I have space in my new home near Whyte Ave for creating music and recording. I am initially interested in playing some shows in Edmonton (of recorded material, but hopefully with added creative influences to enhance the recordings on stage) and continuing to do short tours through Western Canada, however I am keen to continue creating, recording and touring broadly with a core group (as time and life permit). Please listen to what I've done so far to see if your musical interests would fit. All the best,
Marv
From my CBC artist description:
Dog food chef. Sagebrush, love, hate, train robbers and undertakers. Edmonton. V8s. Kamloops piss jugs. Two releases plus one single available on streaming services - The Greasy Sun singles and The Tired Twin singles, + John the Revelator (American gospel standard).
I included a short story that is part of the liner notes of one of the releases:
Tired Twin, a story of young Marv
After delivering their second catch of the season in Victoria and traversing the strait of Juan de Fuca back to open ocean, the 49-foot wooden fishing boat Spring Fever No. 1 was feeling light in the swell, moving slowly to the fishing grounds but with purpose, direction and its illicit US-purchased Fred Meyer wine stores.
At 1100 hours on this grey open-ocean travel day, Marv and Skipper Jim sat in the diesel-stained wheelhouse, sipping second coffees and then toasting over the requisite two ounces of Jose Cuervo. Glancing at the radar screen, Marv noticed a large ship starboard and aft. The vessel was approaching them just as they headed into US waters, and Skipper Jim knew they were the US Coast Guard. The confident death star/Starship Enterprise-esque boat became increasingly visible through newly-descended dense coastal fog, and a radio transmission from the ship’s vessel inspection unit was received and responded to by Skipper Jim. Spring Fever No. 1 would be boarded by 2 officers who would approach by Zodiac, said the radio operator with a southern drawl and a lisp.
After an awkward docking of the Zodiac at Spring Fever’s stern, two uniformed men in their early twenties, one tall and skinny and one short and fat, were getting their balance on a boat deck that shifted in the swell much more than the deck of their mothership. Marvin had the thought that they looked like the number 10 standing next to each other, and maybe they shared the common dream of joining the US Coast Guard while at separate suburban high schools in far apart, landlocked states.
The tall and skinny one made his way into the wheelhouse and sat down at the small galley table with a fresh looking three-ringed binder. He sounded exceedingly official as he read out the series of requisite questions, until he visibly hit a wall with the current exercise. “Excuse me, gentlemen - I just hope that I could get some fresh air and that we could return to our business very shortly.” The kid went to the deck and puked for twenty minutes straight while skipper Jim fed him saltine crackers and apple juice.
