ABOUT

I was blessed to grow up in a music loving family. After taking piano, clarinet, and guitar lessons I got my first bass at age 14 and haven't stopped playing since. I currently teach guitar and bass in my own studio. I play bass with Quintessential, a five piece jazz band and The Revelators, a 4 piece classic rock/blues band that plays originals. I do freelance and studio work as time permits as well as composing and arranging for Quintessential.

Music faves: jazz, jazz, jazz, fusion, funk, rock, blues, gospel, did I mention jazz?

My style: solid groove with great tone always comes first, anything flashy must serve the pocket.
My best tool: listening
Second best tool: my hands
My sound:
Fretted - classic solid low end Fender J-bass tone.
Fretless - warm and clean, near to an upright, and when needed, a little "mwah" or some Jaco-like tone but warmer.
Habits: practise daily, show up on time, kick butt, keep a low profile and let the bass do the talkin'.
Near claim to fame: Waaaaaay back I was invited to tour with Paul Janz. (I said no)
My goal: Play better tomorrow than I play today.
Seeking: I am looking to hire out for occasional gigs, recording projects, soundtracks, etc.
Turn offs: egos, noodlers, big talkers.

Influences

Bass players: Nathan East, Ray Brown, Charlie Haden, Gary Peacock, Don Thompson, Marcus Miller, Jimmy Haslip, Jaco, Alain Caron, Victor, Stanley Clarke and many others.

Other musicians and bands: Duke Elliington, Miles Davis, Kenny Baron, Keith Jarrett, Jack Dejohnette, Sonny Rollins, Paul Desmond, MIke Stern, Pat Metheny, Bill Evans, The Yellowjackets, Fourplay, Spyro Gyra, Eric Clapton, Cream, Herbie Hancock, James Taylor, John Mayer, Zeppellin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robben Ford.

I have had the great privilege of growing up and living through an amazing four of decades of music and have listened to so many great bands. It is very interesting for me to see how many kids (jr. high age) are heavy into alot of vintage rock bands from the late '60's and early '70's. Some of my young guitar and bass students can hardly believe that some of the tunes they are into are songs I heard fresh when they orignally came out. I have also had the opportunity to play all kinds of music with all kind of musicians from beginner to pro. I have learned that the best thing a bass player can do is listen, then listen some more. From where I sit the role of the bass is to hold the band together, make sure the root of the movement is covered well, and when asked, step out and show your stuff.
