ABOUT

I'm a youthful 62 yo non-pro (but super committed and motivated) multi-instrumentalist living in North Vancouver. I have extremely diverse musical interests. After a 40-year hiatus, I came back to tenor trombone in late 2023 and currently am 1st trombone in a community jazz band called The Accidentals. We play swing, soul jazz, and some jazz band arrangements of pop tunes. But that's just one thing I do. I also play a custom tuned 6-string electric bass - just 'shedding on that for the past five years (also after a lengthy prior hiatus - I played tons when I was younger) but would totally see myself getting into a band or regular jam situation with that instrument as well. On top of that, I also am a self-directed student of piano and have an extensive classical repertoire (from Baroque through to 20th century rock/pop arrangements) and have composed for that instrument. Last but not least, I have an ambient music project called Man With a Movie Camera, and I've released a total of 14 long form EP and full-length albums on Bandcamp (plus Spotify, Apple Music, etc.). So I'm really kind of happily all over the map musically, from the conventional to the experimental and I can honestly say I have a keen ear for all those things.

My ambient project, Man With a Movie Camera, is live on Bandcamp: https://manwithamoviecamera.bandcamp.com/

Influences

I take musical influences from pretty much anywhere, depending on the setting and what kind of effect it has on me as a listener. With respect to my ambient music project (Man With a Movie Camera), I take influence from both the obvious heroes (Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, Geir Jenssen/Biosphere, William Basinski, etc.) to a whole raft of younger generation artists. For my trombone playing, I definitely gravitate to the all-time jazz greats like Jack Teagarden, JJ Johnson, Slide Hampton, etc. For bass, though I admire Jaco like most electric bassists, I feel it's the slightly more off-beat fretless players like Percy Jones and Mick Karn who speak to me even more directly (even though I myself play only fretted at the moment) - oh, but let's not forget Bootsy Collins! And for piano, it's really the composers themselves, and their best known interpreters, who influence me the most. So that would include JS Bach (Glenn Gould, Yo Yo Ma), Beethoven (Andras Schiff), Chopin (Horowitz), Debussy, Satie, etc. I've even done a solo piano arrangement of Frank Zappa's "Peaches en Regalia"!. So my influences are really all over the place. And I don't think that's a bad thing.
