ABOUT

Sure, I'm middle-aged. Hey, you gotta get this old to be able to play the way I do. It's been said that the guitar is the most difficult instrument to learn how to play well, and the easiest instrument to learn how to play badly. The important aspects of acquiring the knack for consistent quality in playing a musical instrument are - 1. sense of timing, and 2. sense of harmony. I am fortunate to be gifted with THE EAR, and an almost eerie sense of THE BEAT. I do not do covers, but play only my own chord arrangements. Yup, I'm an original, like it or not. And oh, I laugh at people who need to use Capos. I think that mastery of the barred chord is essential, if only to maintain the quality of sound that a decent acoustic guitar delivers.

As for my other interests, if you want to take a break from music related stuff for a good read, I have a blog at baudrunner dot blogspot dot com. I like to think that I have a good grip on reality. I've pretty much abandoned updating that blog but the articles are still there. I prefer reading and commenting on science sites. That way, I know that am heard.

If you would like to discuss options, and you live within Vancouver commuting distance (not too far), contact me at <baudrunner at live dot com>. I want to hear from interested players who want to work around original arrangements.

Influences

The standards, like the Beatles in my early life, and the typical E7-A7-B7 blues stuff which influenced all those early guys. I still do them, but all over the fingerboard. I'd have to say that the biggest influence in my arrangements has to be the venerable Mickey Baker. He appears to have the same ear that I have. I first learned to play my lead riffs by following and playing along with Johnny Winter And Live with Rick Derringer.

EQUIPMENT

I play on a Takamine "G" series acoustic guitar strung with Elixir medium guage nanoweb plain steels. I had it equipped with a Fishman under-the-saddle pickup. It's the only instrument I own, but when it comes to electric, I like the old Gibson "SG" series - very mellow, and a very playable little guitar. I dream of owning an L5 some day.
