ABOUT

Hi there! Long years away from this site so it's time to update this thing:

My name is Brock. I'm a 34 year-old high school teacher. I have a wide range of musical interests, spread regrettably thin. I see music as "playing roles, filling holes", and so I play instruments that try and do that. For example, "This song needs a walky bassline..." On it. This song needs some sort of frills on top. I'll try! No one wants to sing this one, I'm on it. So my oh-so-small music room has developed with that philosophy in mind. I started with bass, which is still my first love. I then moved to guitar, and then branched out into mandolin, banjo, stuff with strings. I can also carry a tune. I like to think of my voice as the budget love-child of Shane McGowan from the Pogues and Johnny Cash. What I lack in vocal range I make up for with energy. I'm A-ok taking a backseat to vocalists with real pipes. I also really like doing that kind of ridiculous sorta monotone bass background vocals you sometimes hear in bluegrass music.

I'm hard to nail down musically. I grew up playing country and 50s/60s rock. Then I went through my mohawk/leather punk rock days, then I got really into Celtic stuff, then back to country and rockabilly and roots and just chill stuff in general. I'd be just as happy playing in a rockabilly band or a ska band. I played in bands along the way, and spent my 20s singing jingles for CTV and Bell Media Radio in Ottawa. I'll play anything that's got heart. I have an unhealthy love of Dolly Parton.
