Jorge Emilo Maza Valdes-Biography
Jorge Emilio Maza was born in Havana, Cuba in 1962. His musical roots are connected to a long line of famous Cuban musicians. His father, Jose Maza was a proficient flutist and the lead vocalist of: “SIGLO XX”, one of the most renown dancing orchestras in Cuba during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. His father introduced young Jorge Maza at the age of seven to the music world specifically to the flute and therefore becoming Jorges’s first flute teacher. Jorge Maza cousin: Roberto Maza also known as “El Vive Bien” happened to be an outstanding and famous “RUMBA” singer and congas player with several recordings in his career, which gave Jorge Maza the chance to see and feel this Afro-Cuban musical expression.
• In 1973, Jorge Maza started the musical studies in the conservatory ''Amadeo Roldan''.
• In 1981, he began his career as professional musician with: ''La 440'' Cuban orchestra as flute
and saxophone player.
• In 1983, he entered into the navy band where he met “Irakere's” famous trumpet player: Arturo Sandoval and saxophone player: Paquito D'Rivera
• During the late 80's, he began to perform with: “Charanga Habanera” until 1998.
• In 1998, he formed: “Charanga Forever” which he was the band leader, flute and tenor
saxophone player.
• In 1999, he joined “Cubanismo”directed by the Cuban trumpet player: Jesus Alemany playing the baritone Sax and flute player until today.
• In 2006, he settled in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he performs at local venues with other Canadian-Cuban musicians while not on tour with world renowned-Jesus Alemany's “Cubanismo”.
